Dua Collection โ€“ Essential Supplications for Every Occasion

Over 30 authentic duas from the Quran and Sunnah with Arabic text, transliteration, translation, and Hadith references. Your complete guide to communicating with Allah.

The Power of Dua: Direct Communication with Allah

Dua (supplication) is the essence of worship in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said: 'Dua is worship itself.' It is the most intimate form of communication between a servant and their Creator โ€” a direct, personal conversation with the Lord of the Worlds, without intermediaries, without appointments, without barriers.

Allah Himself invites His servants to call upon Him: 'And your Lord says, Call upon Me; I will respond to you.' (Surah Ghafir 40:60). This divine promise is unconditional โ€” Allah guarantees a response to every sincere supplication, though the response may come in three forms: granting the request, averting a harm, or storing the reward for the Hereafter.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Nothing averts divine decree except dua.' This powerful hadith establishes that supplication has the power to change what is written โ€” a concept that elevates dua from a passive wish to an active force that shapes reality. It is a weapon of the believer, a shield against calamity, and a rope connecting earth to heaven.

This comprehensive collection gathers the most authentic and powerful duas from the Quran and Sunnah, organized by occasion and need. Every dua includes the original Arabic text, transliteration for non-Arabic speakers, English translation, and the authentic source reference. These are not fabricated prayers โ€” they are the exact words taught by Allah in His Book and by His Messenger ๏ทบ in authenticated hadith collections.

Making dua is recommended at all times, but certain times and conditions are especially blessed: the last third of the night, between the Adhan and Iqamah, while fasting, during rain, on the Day of Arafat, while prostrating in prayer, and on Friday. The etiquette includes facing the Qiblah, raising the hands, beginning with praise of Allah and salawat upon the Prophet ๏ทบ, and being sincere and persistent.

Etiquette and Conditions for Accepted Dua

While Allah accepts dua from any sincere heart, following the Prophet's guidance on the etiquette of supplication increases the likelihood of acceptance and demonstrates proper adab (manners) with the Creator.

    1. Sincerity (Ikhlas): The dua must be made sincerely for Allah alone, not to show off or impress others. The heart should be fully present and engaged, not making dua out of mere habit while the mind wanders.

    2. Begin with Praise and Salawat: The Prophet ๏ทบ heard a man making dua in prayer without praising Allah or sending blessings upon the Prophet. He said: 'This one was hasty.' He then taught that dua should begin with praising Allah (Alhamdulillah, Subhanallah) and sending salawat upon the Prophet ๏ทบ before making requests.

    3. Halal Earnings: The Prophet ๏ทบ mentioned a man on a long journey, disheveled and dusty, raising his hands to the sky saying 'O Lord, O Lord!' โ€” but his food was haram, his drink was haram, his clothing was from haram. The Prophet ๏ทบ asked: 'How can his dua be answered?' This hadith establishes that consuming halal is a prerequisite for accepted dua.

    4. Certainty and Confidence: The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Call upon Allah while being certain of being answered, and know that Allah does not respond to a dua from a heedless and distracted heart.' The supplicant should make dua with conviction, not saying 'O Allah, forgive me if You will' but rather asking with full confidence.

    5. Persistence: Do not give up. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'The servant's dua is answered as long as he does not become hasty โ€” saying, I made dua but it was not answered.' Allah's timing is perfect; what seems like delay may be protection, and the reward of patience in waiting is itself a gift.

    6. Best Times for Dua: The last third of the night (Tahajjud time), during Sujood (prostration), between Adhan and Iqamah, while fasting (especially at iftar), on Friday (especially the last hour before Maghrib), on the Day of Arafat, and during rain.

    The Most Powerful Quranic Duas

Duas found directly in the Quran hold a special status because they are composed by Allah Himself and taught to His servants as models of how to ask. These supplications were made by prophets and righteous people in their most critical moments, and Allah preserved them in the Quran for all generations to benefit from.

Quranic duas are considered more powerful than personal supplications because: (1) They use the most beautiful and appropriate language to address the Creator. (2) They have been tested โ€” the prophets who made them received divine responses. (3) Reciting them carries the double reward of both Quran recitation and dua.

Scholars recommend memorizing as many Quranic duas as possible and incorporating them into daily worship, particularly during Sujood (prostration), after Tashahhud in prayer, and during the blessed times mentioned above.

The collection below includes duas from various prophets โ€” Adam's repentance, Ibrahim's supplications for his family and community, Musa's cry for help, Yunus's plea from the belly of the whale, and the believers' general supplications for guidance and protection. Each carries a unique spiritual power tied to the circumstances in which it was first made.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Dua

Dua (supplication) is a direct, personal prayer to Allah asking for help, guidance, forgiveness, or any need. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said: 'Dua is worship itself' (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3372). Unlike the formal five daily prayers (Salah), dua can be made at any time, in any language, in any position. It is considered the most intimate form of communication between a servant and their Creator.

The most blessed times for dua are: (1) The last third of the night (before Fajr). (2) During prostration (Sujood) in prayer. (3) Between the Adhan and Iqamah. (4) While fasting, especially at the time of breaking the fast (Iftar). (5) On Friday, particularly the last hour before Maghrib. (6) On the Day of Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah). (7) During rainfall. (8) While traveling. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of the fasting person at the time of breaking fast, the supplication of a just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed.'

You can make dua in any language โ€” Allah understands all languages and knows what is in every heart. The Prophet ๏ทบ and the Quran teach specific Arabic duas because they are the most eloquent and divinely inspired words to address the Creator. However, personal supplications in your native language are perfectly valid and accepted. Many scholars recommend learning the Arabic duas for their added spiritual merit while also making personal duas in your own language.

Sayyid al-Istighfar (the Master Supplication for Forgiveness) is the most comprehensive dua for seeking forgiveness, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ. It acknowledges Allah as Lord, affirms the servant's covenant, seeks refuge from sins, and asks for forgiveness. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Whoever says it with conviction during the day and dies that day before evening, will be among the people of Paradise. And whoever says it with conviction during the night and dies that night before morning, will be among the people of Paradise' (Sahih Bukhari 6306).

The Prophet ๏ทบ said that every sincere dua is answered in one of three ways: (1) Allah grants exactly what you asked for. (2) Allah averts a harm that would have befallen you. (3) Allah stores the reward for you in the Hereafter. The Prophet ๏ทบ also said: 'The servant's dua is answered as long as he does not become hasty โ€” saying, I made dua but it was not answered.' Patience, consistency, and trust in Allah's timing are essential. Also check that your earnings and food are halal, as the Prophet ๏ทบ indicated this as a condition for acceptance.

The recommended etiquette includes: (1) Face the Qiblah. (2) Raise your hands with palms facing upward. (3) Begin with praising Allah (Alhamdulillah) and sending salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ. (4) Acknowledge your sins and ask for forgiveness. (5) Make your request with sincerity and conviction. (6) End with salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ. (7) Be in a state of wudu if possible. (8) Do not ask for anything sinful or for the severing of family ties.

Quranic duas hold a special status because they are composed by Allah Himself and taught to His servants as models of how to ask. They carry the double reward of Quran recitation and dua. However, this does not diminish the value of personal duas โ€” Allah says 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.' The best practice is to combine both: recite Quranic and Prophetic duas for their proven spiritual power, and add personal supplications from your heart for your specific needs.

Yes, making dua for the deceased is not only permissible but highly encouraged. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds stop except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for them' (Sahih Muslim 1631). The standard dua is: 'Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu' (O Allah, forgive them and have mercy on them). Making dua for deceased parents is one of the greatest acts of filial devotion.

The Dua of Yunus is: 'La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen' (There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers). Prophet Yunus made this dua from inside the belly of the whale, in the depths of the sea, in complete darkness. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said: 'No Muslim makes dua with it for anything except that Allah responds to him' (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3505). It is especially powerful in desperate situations.

The Prophet ๏ทบ used to repeat his duas three times. However, there is no strict limit โ€” you may repeat a dua as many times as you wish. Some adhkar have specific counts (e.g., Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 34 times after prayer). For personal supplications, the key is sincerity and presence of heart, not mechanical repetition. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Know that Allah does not respond to a dua from a heedless and distracted heart.'
