    The story behind Tasbih Fatimah

Fatimah (RA) worked so hard at the hand mill that her hands were sore. When she heard that captives had been brought to Madinah, she went to ask her father ﷺ for a servant. He came to her and Ali (RA) at night and said: “Shall I not tell you of something better than what you asked for? When you go to bed, say Allahu Akbar thirty-four times, SubhanAllah thirty-three times and Alhamdulillah thirty-three times. That is better for you than a servant.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3705, Sahih Muslim 2727).

Ali (RA) later said he never stopped saying it after hearing it from the Prophet ﷺ, not even on the night of the Battle of Siffin.

    When to recite it

Before sleeping: this is the time named in the hadith of Fatimah (RA).

After every obligatory prayer: the Prophet ﷺ taught 33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah and 33 Allahu Akbar, completed to 100 with “La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir”. Whoever says this has their sins forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea (Sahih Muslim 597).
