Hadith Story

The Prostitute Who Gave Water to a Dog

    قصة البغي والكلب

A woman known for immorality found a dog dying of thirst. She climbed down a well and brought water in her shoe. This single act of mercy earned her Allah's forgiveness and Paradise.

    📖 Sahih Bukhari 3321, Sahih Muslim 2245

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told a story that fills hearts with hope:

"A prostitute from the Children of Israel saw a dog on a very hot day, going around a well, panting with thirst. She saw that it was near death from thirst.

She removed her shoe, tied it to her headscarf, and lowered it into the well. She drew out water and gave it to the dog to drink.

Because of this act, she was forgiven."

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is there reward for us in serving animals?"

He replied, "There is reward in serving any living being."

This story is breathtaking in its implications. Consider who this woman was - someone whose profession was considered among the most sinful. In any religious tradition, prostitution is condemned. By all outward measures, this woman was far from righteousness.

And yet, on this particular day, she did something extraordinary. She saw a dog - an animal that some consider unclean - suffering in the heat, dying of thirst. Something in her heart moved. She couldn't simply walk away.

But how could she help? The well was deep, and she had no bucket, no rope. Her only option was to use what she had: her own shoe. She tied it to her headscarf and lowered it down into the cool water below.

Think about the physical effort: climbing down or leaning deep into a well, pulling up the shoe filled with water, offering it to a desperate animal. Think about the humility: using her own footwear, dirtying her clothes, all for a dog.

And because of this single act of mercy, Allah forgave all her sins. All of them. The woman whose life was defined by sin was given Paradise because, in one moment, she showed genuine compassion for one of Allah's creatures.

The companions, hearing this story, asked an important question: "O Messenger of Allah, is there reward for us in serving animals?" In other words, is this a special case, or is there a general principle?

The Prophet's response opened a door of opportunity for all believers: "There is reward in serving any living being."

Every creature that suffers from thirst that you give water - reward. Every animal that is hungry that you feed - reward. Every bird, every cat, every dog, every living thing that you show mercy to - reward.

This hadith also teaches us never to judge people by their outward appearance or known sins. Allah sees the hearts. A single sincere act of mercy can outweigh years of sin if it reflects genuine transformation of the heart.

The woman in this story may have lived a life of sin, but in that moment by the well, she displayed a quality that Allah loves: mercy. And Allah, Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful, responded to her mercy with His infinite mercy.
