The Woman and Her Cat
قصة المرأة والهرة
A woman was punished in Hell for imprisoning a cat without feeding it or letting it find food on its own. This teaches the importance of mercy to all creatures.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"A woman was punished because of a cat which she had imprisoned until it died. She entered the Fire because of it."
He ﷺ continued to explain her crime:
"She neither fed it nor gave it water when she imprisoned it, nor did she let it free to eat from the vermin of the earth."
This brief but powerful hadith tells the story of a woman who owned a cat. For reasons unknown to us, she decided to confine the cat. Perhaps she was annoyed by it, perhaps she wanted to punish it for some behavior, or perhaps she simply didn't care.
Whatever her reason, she locked the cat away and then neglected it completely. She gave it no food. She gave it no water. Day after day, the cat suffered in its confinement, growing weaker and weaker from hunger and thirst.
The cat didn't need much. Even if the woman couldn't or wouldn't feed it herself, she could have simply let it go. A cat can find its own food - catching mice and other small creatures, scavenging for scraps. But even this small mercy was denied.
Eventually, the cat died - alone, hungry, thirsty, and imprisoned.
Because of this cruelty, the woman earned punishment in the Hellfire.
This story is remarkable for several reasons. First, it shows that kindness to animals is not optional in Islam - it is a religious obligation. The life of every creature matters to Allah.
Second, it shows that sins of omission - failing to do good when we could - are just as serious as sins of commission. The woman may not have actively harmed the cat with violence, but her neglect was itself a form of harm.
Third, it warns us that what may seem like a "small" matter to us may be very serious in Allah's sight. We might think, "It's just a cat" - but to Allah, every soul, every creature He created, has value.
Fourth, it teaches that we are responsible for those under our care. The cat was dependent on the woman. She had taken responsibility for it by keeping it, and that responsibility came with obligations.
The Prophet ﷺ also taught the opposite lesson through other hadiths - that kindness to animals can lead to Paradise. He told the story of a prostitute from the Children of Israel who gave water to a thirsty dog and was forgiven her sins because of this single act of mercy.
Together, these stories paint a complete picture: mercy to Allah's creatures, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is a path to Allah's mercy. And cruelty to any creature, even a cat, can be a path to punishment.
Lessons from This Story
- 1Animals have rights in Islam, and we are accountable for how we treat them
- 2Cruelty through neglect is just as sinful as active harm
- 3What seems small to us may be significant to Allah
- 4We are responsible for those under our care, including animals
- 5Even 'small' sins can lead to serious punishment if they reflect cruelty
