    What is Ramadan?

Ramadan (رمضان) is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar (Hijri) calendar and is the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. It is the month in which the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). Allah says in the Quran: 'The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion' (Quran 2:185).

During Ramadan, all adult Muslims who are physically able are required to fast (Sawm) from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). Fasting in Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it an obligation upon every sane, adult Muslim. The fast involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations during daylight hours.

Ramadan is not merely about abstaining from food and drink. It is a time for spiritual reflection, increased devotion, self-discipline, and generosity. Muslims spend extra time reading the Quran, performing Taraweeh prayers at night, giving charity (Zakat and Sadaqah), and seeking forgiveness from Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained' (Sahih Bukhari 1899).

Ramadan 2026 is expected to begin on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (1 Ramadan 1447 AH), based on astronomical calculations. The exact date depends on the sighting of the crescent moon (hilal) in each locality. The blessed month will last for 30 days, ending on March 18, 2026, with Eid al-Fitr celebrations on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

    Ramadan Daily Schedule

    1
    Before Fajr (Dawn)

    Suhoor (Pre-Dawn Meal)

Wake up before Fajr to eat Suhoor. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Eat Suhoor, for in Suhoor there is blessing' (Sahih Bukhari 1923). Stop eating and drinking when the Fajr Adhan begins.

    2
    Dawn

    Fajr Prayer

    3
    Daytime

    Work & Worship

Continue your daily activities while maintaining the fast. Avoid backbiting, lying, and anger. Use free moments for dhikr and Quran recitation.

    4
    Midday

    Dhuhr & Asr Prayers

Pray Dhuhr and Asr on time. Take a short rest if possible. Many Muslims complete one Juz (chapter) of the Quran daily to finish the entire Quran during Ramadan.

    5
    Sunset (Maghrib)

    Iftar (Breaking Fast)

Break your fast at the Maghrib Adhan, preferably with dates and water following the Sunnah. Recite the Iftar dua: 'Dhahaba ath-thama'u wabtallatil urooqu wa thabatal ajru in sha Allah.'

    Taraweeh Prayer

Pray Taraweeh (night prayers) in congregation at the mosque or at home. Taraweeh consists of 8 or 20 Rak'ahs depending on the tradition followed. The Quran is completed during Taraweeh throughout the month.

    Rules of Fasting in Ramadan

What breaks your fast and what doesn't - based on scholarly consensus

    What Breaks Your Fast

    • Eating or drinking intentionally
    • Smoking or using tobacco products
    • Sexual intercourse during fasting hours
    • Intentional vomiting
    • Menstruation or postpartum bleeding
    • Intravenous (IV) nutritional injections

What Does NOT Break Your Fast

    • Eating or drinking forgetfully (unintentional)
    • Brushing teeth with toothpaste (if nothing is swallowed)
    • Taking a shower or swimming
    • Using eye drops or ear drops
    • Blood tests and non-nutritional injections
    • Swallowing saliva
    • Tasting food without swallowing
    • Using perfume or fragrance

Note: If you break your fast unintentionally, simply continue fasting. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If someone forgets and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it was Allah who fed him and gave him drink' (Sahih Bukhari 1933).

    Complete Taraweeh Prayer Guide

Everything you need to know about Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan 2026

Taraweeh (تراويح) prayers are special nightly prayers performed during Ramadan after the Isha prayer. The word 'Taraweeh' comes from the Arabic root meaning 'to rest,' as worshippers would take brief rests after every four Rak'ahs. Taraweeh is classified as a Sunnah Mu'akkadah (emphasized Sunnah) and is one of the most beloved acts of worship during Ramadan.

How to Pray Taraweeh - Step by Step

    1

    Pray Isha Prayer First

Taraweeh is prayed after the obligatory Isha prayer and its two Rak'ah Sunnah. Make sure you have completed Isha before beginning Taraweeh.

    2

    Make the Intention (Niyyah)

Make the intention in your heart to pray Taraweeh for the sake of Allah. You do not need to verbalize the intention.

    3

Pray in Sets of Two Rak'ahs

Taraweeh is prayed in sets of two Rak'ahs, similar to how you pray the Fajr Sunnah. After every two Rak'ahs, make Salam (Tasleem) to the right and left.

    4

    Take Brief Rests

After every four Rak'ahs (two sets of two), it is Sunnah to take a brief rest. During this time, you can make dhikr, dua, or simply sit quietly.

    5

    Complete Your Desired Number

Continue praying sets of two Rak'ahs until you complete 8 or 20 Rak'ahs. There is flexibility in the number.

    6

    End with Witr Prayer

After completing Taraweeh, pray Witr prayer (1 or 3 Rak'ahs). Include Dua al-Qunut in the last Rak'ah.

    8 vs 20 Rak'ahs - The Scholarly Discussion

    8 Rak'ahs Position

Based on the hadith of Aisha (RA): 'The Prophet ﷺ did not pray more than 11 Rak'ahs in Ramadan or outside it' (Sahih Bukhari 2013). This means 8 Rak'ahs of Taraweeh plus 3 Witr.

    20 Rak'ahs Position

During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), he gathered the people behind Ubayy ibn Ka'b who led them in 20 Rak'ahs (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah). All four Sunni schools consider 20 Rak'ahs valid.

Both positions are supported by authentic evidence. The most important thing is the quality and sincerity of prayer, not the quantity.

Praying Taraweeh at Home vs Mosque

    🕌 Mosque

Praying in the mosque has the added benefit of community worship and listening to beautiful Quran recitation from a skilled Hafiz.

    🏠 Home

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best prayer of a person is in his house, except for the obligatory prayers' (Sahih Bukhari 731). Praying at home is perfectly valid.

Tip: If you pray at home, try to recite longer portions of the Quran to complete a full reading (Khatm) during Ramadan.

Dua for Completing Quran in Taraweeh

    اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي بِالْقُرْآنِ وَاجْعَلْهُ لِي إِمَامًا وَنُورًا وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً

Allahumma arhamni bil-Quran waj'alhu li imaman wa nuran wa hudan wa rahmah

O Allah, have mercy on me through the Quran, and make it for me a guide, a light, a guidance, and a mercy.

30-Day Quran Completion Plan for Ramadan

Complete the entire Quran during Ramadan by reading one Juz each day.

The Quran consists of 30 Juz (parts), perfectly aligned with the 30 days of Ramadan. By reading approximately 20 pages per day, you can complete the entire Quran during the blessed month. The Prophet ﷺ would review the Quran with Angel Jibreel every Ramadan (Sahih Bukhari 4998).

Tips for Completing Quran in Ramadan

    • Read after Fajr prayer when the mind is fresh and alert
    • Divide daily reading into 4-5 page sessions spread throughout the day
    • Listen to recitation during commute or while cooking for Iftar
    • Use a Quran app with translation to understand the meanings
    • Read with a study partner to stay accountable

Fasting during Ramadan can have numerous health benefits when done properly. Here is a comprehensive guide to staying healthy during Ramadan 2026.

Choose foods that release energy slowly to sustain you throughout the day.

    • Complex carbohydrates: Oats, whole wheat bread, brown rice
    • Protein-rich foods: Eggs, Greek yogurt, cheese, lean chicken
    • Healthy fats: Avocado, nuts (almonds, walnuts), olive oil
    • Hydrating foods: Watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes
    • Dates and bananas: Natural sugars plus potassium
    • Water and herbal teas: Drink at least 2-3 glasses at Suhoor

    Ideal Iftar Foods

Break your fast gently following the Sunnah, then eat a balanced meal.

    • Dates and water: Follow the Sunnah - dates provide quick natural sugar
    • Warm soup: Lentil, chicken, or vegetable soup prepares the stomach
    • Salads: Fresh vegetables provide essential vitamins and fiber
    • Lean proteins: Grilled chicken, fish, or legumes
    • Complex carbs: Rice, pasta, or bread in moderate portions
    • Fresh fruits: Choose fruits over sugary sweets when possible

    Foods to Avoid

    • Fried and greasy foods: They cause indigestion and sluggishness
    • Excessive caffeine: Can cause dehydration
    • Very salty foods: Increase thirst during fasting hours
    • Processed sugars: Cause energy spikes and crashes
    • Overeating at Iftar: Eat slowly and moderately

    Hydration Tips

    • Drink 8-10 glasses of water between Iftar and Suhoor
    • Avoid drinking large amounts at once - sip gradually
    • Eat water-rich fruits like watermelon, grapes, and oranges
    • Avoid excessive caffeine and carbonated drinks
    • Keep a water bottle nearby during evening hours

    Managing Medications While Fasting

Consult your doctor before Ramadan to adjust medication schedules. Many medications can be taken during Suhoor or Iftar hours. Options include switching to long-acting formulations, adjusting timing of twice-daily medications, and for insulin-dependent diabetics, working with your endocrinologist. Never stop or adjust medications without medical advice.

    Children and Fasting

Fasting is not obligatory for children until puberty. Parents are encouraged to gradually introduce fasting. Children aged 7-10 can practice half-day fasts. By age 10-12, many children can fast full days with proper nutrition. Always ensure children stay hydrated and never force a child to fast if they feel unwell.

    Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women

Islam provides an exemption if they fear harm to themselves or their child. Scholars differ on whether they need Qada (making up fasts) or Fidyah (feeding a poor person per day), or both. Consult a qualified Islamic scholar and medical professional.

    Travelers

Travelers are explicitly exempt in the Quran: 'And whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days' (Quran 2:185). The journey must be approximately 80 km or more. Missed fasts must be made up after Ramadan.

    The Elderly and Chronically Ill

Those who cannot fast permanently must pay Fidyah - feeding one poor person per day missed. This is typically equivalent to providing one average meal. If the condition is temporary, the person should make up the fasts when able.

    New Muslims

For new Muslims experiencing their first Ramadan, ease into fasting gradually. Start with half-day fasts. Focus on spiritual aspects - prayer, Quran reading, and community. Most Muslim communities are welcoming and eager to help. Remember that Allah judges by intention and effort.

About Ramadan - The Blessed Month of Fasting

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (Sawm), prayer, reflection, and community. It commemorates the first revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Angel Jibreel. The Quran states: 'The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights the new moon of the month, let him fast it' (Quran 2:185).

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib), abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and other physical needs. The pre-dawn meal is called Suhoor (also spelled Sehri or Sahur), and the meal to break the fast at sunset is called Iftar. Fasting in Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, alongside the Shahada (declaration of faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat (almsgiving), and Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).

The spiritual benefits of Ramadan are immense. Muslims believe that during this month, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained (Sahih Bukhari 1899). The reward for good deeds is multiplied manifold, and the night of Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) in the last ten nights is described as 'better than a thousand months' (Quran 97:3). Muslims are encouraged to read the entire Quran during this month, increase their dhikr (remembrance of Allah), give generously in charity, and seek forgiveness.

Ramadan 2026 begins on February 17, 2026 and ends on March 18, 2026. Eid al-Fitr 2026, the celebration marking the end of Ramadan, falls on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The last 10 nights of Ramadan (March 8-17, 2026) are the most blessed, with odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th) being the most likely candidates for Laylatul Qadr. The 27th night (March 15, 2026) is traditionally considered the most probable night.

Taraweeh prayers are special nightly prayers performed during Ramadan after the Isha prayer. They can be prayed in congregation at the mosque or individually at home. The number of Rak'ahs varies between 8 and 20 depending on the school of thought followed. During Taraweeh, the entire Quran is typically recited over the course of the month, a practice known as 'Khatm al-Quran.'

Zakat al-Fitr (also known as Fitrana) is a mandatory charity that must be paid before Eid prayer. It is equivalent to approximately 2.5 kg of staple food per family member. This charity ensures that every Muslim, regardless of their financial situation, can participate in the Eid celebrations. In addition to Zakat al-Fitr, many Muslims choose to pay their annual Zakat during Ramadan due to the multiplied rewards.

    Ramadan Traditions Around the World

Ramadan is celebrated with unique traditions across the globe. In Egypt and many Arab countries, a 'Mesaharati' walks through neighborhoods before Fajr, beating a drum to wake people for Suhoor. In Turkey, the 'Ramazan Davulcusu' creates a rhythmic beat through the streets. In Indonesia, communities organize 'Sahur on the Road' events and decorate homes with lights.

In South Asia, Iftar bazaars spring up in every city with an incredible variety of foods from samosas to fruit chaat. The tradition of 'Taraweeh tourism' sees Muslims traveling to hear renowned Quran reciters. In Malaysia and Singapore, Ramadan bazaars are a cultural highlight.

In Western countries, Muslim communities organize interfaith Iftars, inviting neighbors of all faiths. Mosques extend their programs with nightly lectures, youth activities, and charity drives. The sense of community during Ramadan transcends geographical boundaries, united by the shared experience of fasting, prayer, and spiritual growth.
