Prophet Ayyub and His Patience
قصة أيوب وصبره
Prophet Ayyub was tested with the loss of his wealth, children, and health. Through years of suffering, he remained patient and grateful, becoming the ultimate example of sabr in Islam.
Prophet Ayyub (Job), peace be upon him, was a man blessed with everything one could desire. He had vast wealth, numerous children, good health, and high status in his community. Most importantly, he was a righteous servant who constantly remembered Allah through all circumstances.
But Allah chose Ayyub for a different kind of honor - to be tested in ways that would make him an eternal example of patience for all humanity.
First, Ayyub lost his wealth. All his possessions, his lands, his animals, his businesses - everything was taken away. Yet Ayyub remained patient, saying, "Allah gave, and Allah has taken. Praise be to Allah in every condition."
Then, tragedy struck his family. His children perished, one by one. The grief of a parent losing a child is among the most severe tests, yet Ayyub endured the loss of all of them. Still, he did not complain against Allah's decree.
Finally, Ayyub was afflicted with a severe disease. His body became covered with wounds and sores. The illness was so severe that people avoided him, afraid of contagion. His friends abandoned him. The community that once respected him now shunned him.
Only his wife, Rahma, remained faithfully by his side, working to provide for him. Year after year, for approximately eighteen years, Ayyub endured this suffering without complaining. His worship never ceased. His tongue never uttered a word of protest against Allah.
Shaytan tried to tempt him. He whispered to Ayyub, suggesting that his devotion to Allah had brought him nothing but suffering. He tried to convince Ayyub's wife to encourage him to complain. But Ayyub remained steadfast.
Finally, not out of complaint but out of genuine need, Ayyub called upon his Lord: "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful." (Quran 21:83)
This supplication was remarkable in its humility. Ayyub did not demand relief. He did not question Allah's wisdom. He simply stated his condition and acknowledged Allah's mercy. This is the essence of proper dua - recognizing our need while trusting in Allah's infinite mercy.
Allah responded immediately: "Strike [the ground] with your foot - this is a [spring for] a cool bath and drink." (Quran 38:42)
Ayyub struck the ground, and a spring of cool water burst forth. When he bathed in it and drank from it, he was completely healed. His health was restored more perfectly than before.
"And We gave him his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers." (Quran 21:84)
Allah restored everything to Ayyub - his wealth returned multiplied, he was blessed with new children, and his status in the community was elevated. More importantly, his example of patience became an eternal lesson for all believers.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The most severely tested people are the prophets, then those next to them, then those next to them."
