The Night Journey: Isra and Miraj

    الإسراء والمعراج

The miraculous night journey of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Jerusalem (Isra) and then through the heavens (Miraj), where he received the gift of the five daily prayers.

🌟 Prophet Muhammad ﷺ📖 Quran 17:1, 53:1-18, Hadith in Bukhari and Muslim

The Isra and Miraj was one of the most miraculous events in the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It occurred approximately one year before the Hijra (migration to Madinah), during a period known as the "Year of Sorrow" when the Prophet had lost both his beloved wife Khadijah and his protective uncle Abu Talib.

One night, as the Prophet ﷺ rested near the Kaaba, the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) came to him. First, his blessed chest was opened and his heart was washed with Zamzam water and filled with wisdom and faith - a purification for the journey ahead.

Then Jibreel brought a miraculous creature called the Buraq - a white animal, larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, with wings. Each stride of the Buraq covered the distance as far as the eye could see.

"Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs." (Quran 17:1)

The Prophet ﷺ traveled from Makkah to Jerusalem in a single night - a journey that normally took weeks by caravan. At al-Masjid al-Aqsa (the Aqsa Mosque), he was greeted by all the previous prophets, from Adam to Isa (Jesus), peace be upon them all. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ led them all in prayer - a profound symbol that he was the seal of the prophets, completing the message that all prophets had brought.

From Jerusalem, the Prophet ﷺ began the Miraj - the ascension through the seven heavens. At each heaven, he met different prophets:

In the first heaven, he met Adam, the father of humanity. In the second heaven, he met Isa (Jesus) and Yahya (John), the cousins. In the third heaven, he met Yusuf (Joseph), blessed with exceptional beauty. In the fourth heaven, he met Idris, elevated to high station. In the fifth heaven, he met Harun (Aaron), beloved by his people. In the sixth heaven, he met Musa (Moses), who later helped reduce the daily prayers. In the seventh heaven, he met Ibrahim (Abraham), leaning against al-Bayt al-Ma'mur, the heavenly Kaaba visited daily by 70,000 angels.

Each prophet greeted Muhammad ﷺ with "Welcome, O righteous prophet and righteous brother!"

Beyond the seventh heaven, the Prophet ﷺ reached Sidrat al-Muntaha - the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, where creation ends and beyond which no creation can pass. There he saw its leaves like elephant ears and its fruits like earthen jars, covered in indescribable colors.

Here, in a private audience with Allah Most High, the Prophet ﷺ received the gift of the five daily prayers. Initially, fifty prayers were prescribed. On his way back, Prophet Musa advised him to return and ask for a reduction, as his own experience showed that people would find fifty too difficult. The Prophet ﷺ returned multiple times until the prayers were reduced to five, which would carry the reward of fifty.

Allah declared: "My word cannot be changed. These five prayers are equal to fifty."

The Prophet ﷺ returned to Makkah the same night. When morning came and he described his journey, the disbelievers mocked him. They asked Abu Bakr (RA), "Your companion claims he visited Jerusalem and returned in a single night!" Abu Bakr (RA) responded, "If he said that, then he spoke the truth." From that day, Abu Bakr (RA) was called "As-Siddiq" - the one who confirms the truth.

To prove his journey, the Prophet ﷺ described al-Aqsa Mosque in precise detail and mentioned a caravan he had seen that would arrive shortly - which it did, confirming his account.
