Story of the Prophets

Prophet Nuh and the Great Flood

    قصة نوح والطوفان

Prophet Nuh called his people to worship Allah alone for 950 years. When they refused and persecuted him, Allah sent a great flood. Only those on the Ark were saved.

    🌟 Prophet Nuh (AS)📖 Quran - Surah Nuh (71), Hud (11:25-48)

Prophet Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him, was sent to a people deeply entrenched in idol worship. They had created five principal idols - Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr - and refused to abandon them despite Nuh's tireless efforts to guide them.

For 950 years, Nuh called his people to the worship of Allah alone. "I said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain to you in abundance and give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.'" (Quran 71:10-12)

Despite this beautiful invitation, the people rejected him. The wealthy elite mocked him for attracting followers from among the poor. They covered their ears and wrapped their garments around themselves in rejection. They threatened him and demanded he stop preaching.

Nuh tried every approach. He called to them publicly and privately, day and night. But "my invitation only increased them in flight." The leaders told their followers, "Do not leave your gods!"

After centuries of patient preaching, Nuh made a final supplication: "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any of the disbelievers. Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and not beget except wicked disbelievers." (Quran 71:26-27)

Allah responded by commanding Nuh to build an ark. This was remarkable because there was no large body of water nearby. As Nuh and the believers built the massive ship, the disbelievers mocked them. "Each time the chiefs of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him."

Nuh replied, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule [us]. You will know who will get a humiliating punishment." (Quran 11:38-39)

When the ark was complete, Allah sent the sign: "When Our command came and the oven overflowed..." (Quran 11:40). Water burst forth from everywhere - from the ground and from the sky. Nuh was commanded to load the ark with pairs of every animal and those who believed.

The flood waters rose rapidly. Nuh saw his own son standing apart, refusing to board. In desperation, Nuh called out, "O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers!"

His son, confident in his own abilities, replied, "I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water." Nuh pleaded, "There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy."

A wave came between them, and his son was among the drowned. This was among the greatest trials Nuh faced - watching his own child perish due to disbelief.

After the flood subsided, the ark came to rest on Mount Judi. Those aboard - the believers and the animals - descended to repopulate the earth. Nuh is considered the second father of humanity, as all humans after the flood are descended from him and his family.

Nuh lived to see his righteous descendants spread across the earth. His sons - Shem, Ham, and Japheth - became the ancestors of all nations. The legacy of his patience and perseverance continues to inspire believers to this day.
