Prophet Yunus and the Whale
قصة يونس والحوت
When Prophet Yunus left his people in frustration before receiving Allah's permission, he was swallowed by a whale. His sincere dua from the darkness led to his miraculous rescue.
Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, was sent to the city of Nineveh, believed to be in modern-day Iraq near Mosul. The population had reached about 100,000 people, and they had turned away from the worship of Allah.
Yunus preached to his people tirelessly, but they rejected his message. Day after day, month after month, they turned away from his calls to repentance. Growing frustrated with their stubbornness, Yunus made a grave mistake - he left his people without Allah's permission, believing they would never believe.
He boarded a ship, but soon a violent storm threatened to sink the vessel. The sailors, following their custom, cast lots to determine who among the passengers was the cause of their misfortune. The lot fell upon Yunus. They cast lots again, and again, and again - each time it fell upon Yunus.
Recognizing this as divine decree, Yunus was thrown into the raging sea. Allah commanded a great whale to swallow him - not to destroy him, but to teach him an invaluable lesson.
Inside the belly of the whale, in the depths of the ocean, in the darkness of the night, Yunus found himself in layers of darkness upon darkness. There, in that most desperate of situations, he turned to Allah with complete sincerity:
"La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu min adh-dhalimeen" "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." (Quran 21:87)
This dua, known as Dua Yunus or the Dua of Distress, is one of the most powerful supplications in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "No Muslim makes dua with it for anything, ever, except that Allah responds to him." (Tirmidhi)
Allah heard the prayer of His servant. "And thus We saved him from distress. And thus do We save the believers." (Quran 21:88)
The whale was commanded to swim to shore and release Yunus onto the beach. He emerged weakened and sick, his skin damaged from the whale's digestive acids. Allah caused a gourd plant to grow over him, providing shade and nourishment for his recovery.
Meanwhile, something remarkable was happening in Nineveh. After Yunus left, the people witnessed signs of the coming punishment. Unlike previous nations who rejected their prophets until the end, the people of Yunus repented. "Then why was there not a city that believed, and its faith benefited it - except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time." (Quran 10:98)
Yunus returned to find his people had become believers - the entire city of 100,000 souls had turned to Allah! His mission was successful despite his momentary lapse in patience.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had special regard for Yunus, saying, "No one should say that I am better than Yunus ibn Matta." This shows the humility taught in Islam, even regarding other prophets.
